Publishers SUE Google For Training Gemini AI on Copyrighted Books

The lawsuit claims Google reproduced these copyrighted works multiple times during AI training, stripped copyright management information to obscure their origins, and that Gemini now generates content that directly substitutes for original human-authored works. Internal documents cited in the filing allegedly show Google executives were warned in advance that training on publisher-provided books was legally risky, facing potential fines ranging from 10 billion to hundreds of billions of dollars, and that publishers were likely to sue over infringement.
